World Health Organization (WHO) states that the number of people with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014. Also, WHO projects that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death in 2030.
Diabetes is a serious, chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood glucose), or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces (WHO, 2017).
Raised blood glucose, a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes, may over time lead to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves.
